A Marxist-Humanist perspective on Stuart Hall’s communication theory

Abstract At the end of his life, Stuart Hall called for reengagement Cultural Studies and Marxism. This paper contributes to this task. It analyses Hall’s works on communication media. The goal is read in a manner that can inform renewal Marxist Humanism development Marxist-Humanist theory communication. involves reconstructing elements approach, criticising certain aspects work, through engagement developing new elements. article’s analysis media conducted four steps. First, reengages re-evaluates what two paradigms Studies: Structuralism “Culturalism”/Humanism. discusses role human agency society. Second, engages with Althusser’s notions articulation sets notion relation concept Third, it relationship between work context works. Fourth, article revisits encoding/decoding-model digitalisation. grounds dialectical based dialectic articulating articulatedness, communication, as well public sphere society’s power forcefields. shows how critical, benefits from present argues with, for, against, beyond order or productively draw ideas emerge engagement.
